QUEBEC CITY (CIS) – Jeronimo Huerta-Flores rushed for 161
yards and two touchdowns as the defending national champion Laval
Rouge et Or earned a ticket to the 2004 Desjardins Vanier Cup with
a 30-11 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the Uteck Bowl
game, in front of 18,235 at PEPS Stadium.
Laval (10-1 overall) advances to the Vanier Cup game for the third
time in team history. The Rouge et Or defeated Saint Mary’s
14-7 a year ago in Toronto, four years after claiming its first
national title with a 14-10 victory, again over the Huskies.
Laurier (10-1 overall), who captured its first Yates Cup since 1991
last week as OUA champion, came into today’s matchup as the
only undefeated team in the country but couldn’t find a
solution to the dominating Rouge et Or defense, ranked No. 1 in the
CIS.
Fourth-year Hawks quarterback Ryan Pyear completed 17 of 30 passes
for 221 yards and one touchdown but was intercepted three times,
and saw eight more of his passes broken up by Laval defenders.
Huerta-Flores carried the ball 22 times on its way to his second
Bowl MVP honours in as many seasons. The Metepec, Mexico native had
been named MVP of the Dunsmore Cup, Mitchell Bowl and Vanier Cup
games in 2003.
With Laval leading 4-1 after 15 minutes of play, the fourth-year
running back scored on a four-yard run 2:20 into the second
quarter, and added his second major of the afternoon on a two-yard
run with 4:12 left in the half, sending the defending champions to
the locker room with an 18-1 advantage.
Laurier came back to with 11 points on its first drive of the third
stanza when Mike Maurice caught a one-yard pass from Pyear in the
end zone capping an eight-play, 75-yard drive.
But Laval answered less than three minutes later when pivot William
Leclerc threw a 51-yard TD strike to Matt Leblanc down the left
sidelines, putting the score at 25-8 with 8:37 left in the
third.
Leblanc, who finished with two catches for 60 yards, added two
field goals in the contest, while Leclerc was 7-of-19 for 115 yards
and no interception. The fourth-year quarterback added 40 yards on
eight carries.
Laval outgained Laurier 404 net yards to 289, including 259 yards
on the ground. Nick Cameron carried the ball 13 times for 63 yards
for the Hawks, who were held to 68 rushing yards as a team.
The Rouge et Or will meet the winner of today’s Mitchell Bowl
game between Saint Mary’s and Saskatchewan on November 27 at
Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton. Kickoff for the 2004 Desjardins
Vanier Cup is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST (live on TSN and RDS).

-------------------------------
