Live from Percival Molson Stadium throughout the week, CIS Insider Marshall Ferguson brings you his three thoughts after every practice leading up to the 13th annual CIS East-West Bowl Saturday May 9th from McGill.
1. Calm Before The Storm
Following Thursday afternoons crossover practice it was clear the coaching staffs were pleased with the amount of install completed up to that point. Not much else went into the plan on Friday as the morning practice consisted of a one hour lowered tempo practice in place of the usual practice plan involving many contact periods over two hours.
Team West and Laurier Golden Hawks Defensive Back Coach Dwayne Cameron credited the relaxed nature of the last day of preparation to the high level of focus and attention to detail by his guys through the week to that point. The players definitely enjoyed the period of rest and recuperation before the game. Several of the guys told me they were struggling to get their legs back on short notice after their first two a day practices in months.
2. Buzz of Camp
Unfortunately the buzz around both teams Friday was the report that found five CIS players testing positive for banned substances. The CIS East-West Bowl week presents a unique opportunity to have representatives from most if not all schools present. When news that affects everyone breaks during the East-West week it is sure to create conversation.
On the walks to and from dining halls, residence and practice players could be heard trying to figure out exactly what happened and if anyone knew the accused well enough to provide some insight for the other CIS players present. One thing is for sure, after the report was announced there was a clear air of surprise and disappointment in the players fellow league members if the positive tests are proven legitimate.
3. Best Dressed
Thursday evening featured a short banquet dinner to recognize the accomplishments of those surrounding and directly involved with CIS football. The players were required to attend which created yet another opportunity to come together and bond with players they are used to competing with. Both Head Coaches Brian Dobie and Danny Maciocia urged the players to dress their best. the old coach monitor before a banquet of “NO JEANS” was heard several times as the players walked off the field.
McMaster running back Wayne Moore was announced following the banquet at Friday morning’s practice as the best dressed of the evening for his patterned vest.
