SWIM RECAP: Day 2 of the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games
Earning a spot in the final after a stellar semifinal heat the previous day, Delia Lloyd paced the Canadian swimming contingent with a seventh-place finish in the women’s 200m backstroke on Friday.
Lloyd (Toronto, Ont. / Ohio State) finished the final with a time of 2:12.45, a couple seconds shy of the personal-best time of 2:10.10 she posted in the semifinal yesterday. American Leah Shackley won the event with a FISU-record setting time of 2:05.99, followed by teammate Helen Noble in second and Korean Eunji Lee in third.
Elsewhere in the pool, Julie Brousseau (Ottawa, Ont. / Florida) turned heads with a personal-best time of 8:37.23 in the second women’s 800m freestyle heat, advancing to Saturday’s final with the second-best time overall. Her time in the heat broke her personal record by over four seconds.
“I’m definitely very happy with that result, it’s my best. I’ve been doing a lot more distance training, so to see it payoff is nice,” said Brousseau. “I feel best when I try and get a hold of a lead and hold on to it and see what I can do.”
The women’s 800m final will take place at 8:22 p.m. local time on Saturday in Berlin.
Shona Branton (Port Lambton, Ont.) also earned a spot in a Saturday final, advancing in the women’s 50m breaststroke. The Western Mustang graduate posted a time of 31.14 seconds in the morning heat, followed by a 31.25 in the semifinal in the evening. She will be seeded seventh for Saturday’s final, which will begin at 7:35 p.m.
On the men’s side, Collyn Gagne (Milton, Ont. / Simon Fraser) narrowly missed advancing in the 200m individual medley, placing 18th with a time of 2:02.99, less than a second off qualifying for the semifinal.
Despite improving his time by half a second from that morning’s heat, Patrick Hussey placed10th in the men’s 200m freestyle, missing the final by two tenths of a second (1:48.24).
Day 3 of swimming will start at 9:00 a.m. local time tomorrow at SSE Berlin, with seven medals set to be handed out in the evening.
