Canada opened competition at the 2026 FISU World University Cross-Country Championships with a podium performance on Saturday, earning bronze in the women’s team event on the first day of racing at the Cross-Country Village in Cassino, Italy.
Led by strong performances in both the short and long races, the Canadian women combined for 72 points to secure third place behind Italy and Spain. The Italian squad captured the gold medal with 65 points, while Spain finished second with 69. (Points in the team event are awarded based on individual racers’ finishes, so the objective is to score as few points as possible.)
Sophie Courville (McGill/Montréal, Que.) paced the Canadians in the women’s individual long race, finishing sixth in 36 minutes 21 seconds to lead the Maple Leaf contingent. Alexandra McDougall (Guelph/Port Perry, Ont.) followed in 15th place in 37:07, while Maria Linton (Western/Cobourg, Ont.) rounded out Canada’s scoring runners in 16th at 37:27.

Competition concludes Sunday with the mixed relay events. The program begins with the mixed relay short race at 10 a.m. local time, followed by the mixed relay long race at 10:45 a.m.
Canada will field two teams in the mixed relay short race, with squads featuring Jared Howse, Marisha Thompson (Victoria/Norwood, Ont.), Nolan Turgeon and Olivia Cooper on one team, and Félix Quirion, Sophie Coutts (Western/Toronto, Ont.), Jack Lehto and Julia Agostinelli on the other.
In the mixed relay long race, Canada will be represented by Jaxon Kuchar (Victoria/Trail, B.C.), Alexandra McDougall, Angus Skinner and Maria Linton.
Canada sits in fourth place in the Country Challenge competition, which combines times from each event at the two-day championship. With a team medal already secured, Canada will look to close the championships on a high note in Sunday’s relay competitions.
