Carabins open FISU America soccer championship with two wins

LIMA, Peru — The Montréal Carabins men’s and women’s soccer teams both won their opening games at the 2026 FISU America Soccer Championship.

The men defeated Ecuador’s Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) 4-0 on Tuesday. Quentin Touil scored twice, while Calin Calaidjoglu and Isaac Cohen Oréne added a goal apiece.

The referee issued eight yellow cards in the physical contest.

Montréal is tied with the Washington Huskies atop Group A. Washington holds the advantage on goal differential at plus-six compared with plus-four for the Carabins.

The women opened their tournament Wednesday with a 7-2 victory over Chile’s Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC).

Goals from Maïka Sanesac and Sara Trandji gave Montréal a 2-0 lead, but the Chilean side responded with two goals in seven minutes before halftime to send the teams into the break tied 2-2.

The Carabins pulled away in the second half. Rafaëlle Robitaille-Bourgeois and Trandji scored two minutes apart to make it 4-2 before Gabrielle Côté completed a late hat trick, scoring three times in the final 21 minutes.

Montréal sits atop the women’s standings after the opening day. Its plus-five goal differential puts it ahead of the other first-day winners, Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas and the University of Trinidad and Tobago.

The Carabins men will face Washington in a matchup of the Group A leaders Thursday at 2 p.m. Eastern.

The Montréal women return to action Friday against Universidad Tecnológica del Perú–Lima at 12:30 p.m. Eastern.
