DAY 11 RECAP 2025 FISU WINTER WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
Down 2-1 five minutes into the second period, Team Canada Men’s Hockey went on an offensive spree, scoring nine straight goals and dominating Team USA 10-2 to advance to Wednesday’s Gold Medal Game.
MEN’S HOCKEY
Competing in the semifinal at a packed Palatazoli in Turin, USA struck first midway through the opening period. With 30 seconds left in the frame, Jake Lee (UBC) scored a powerplay marker to tie the game 1-1 heading into intermission.
The second period began similarly, with the USA regaining the lead at 2-1 five minutes tino the stanza. Less than five minutes later, the Canadians were rewarded for their sustained pressure. Samuel Huo, on a brilliant feed from his UBC Thunderbirds teammate, Sasha Mutala, tied the game again. From that point on, Canada dominated, scoring eight unanswered goals for a commanding 10-2 victory.
Remarkably, all 10 Canadian goals came from different scorers: Jake Lee, Samuel Huo, Charles Callaghan, Sasha Mutala, Connor Bowie, Conor Tadd Frenette, Nolan Hutcheson, Colson Gengenbach, Kale McCallum, and Kurtis Henry.
With the win, Canada advances to the gold medal game, where they will face Slovakia on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S CURLING
Playing Japan for a berth in the gold medal game, University of Alberta’s Serena Gray-Withers, Catherine Clifford, Brianna Cullen, and Zoe Cinnamon came just short, falling 6-5. With the defeat, the Pandas foursome have a chance at hardware on Wednesday afternoon, in the bronze medal game against Norway.
MEN’S CURLING
In the Men’s Curling semifinal, the University of Regina team of Josh Bryden, Adam Bukurak, Carter Williamson, and Ayden Whittmire dug themselves a hole against USA that they couldn’t climb out of. The Americans scored eight in the first three ends; a deficit the Canadians chipped away at but ran out of time, falling 8-4. The Cougars foursome will play for bronze on Wednesday against Switzerland.
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING
In the 4 x 7.5km relay, both Canadian teams exceeded expectations. The women’s team of Stella Duncan, Sarah Cullinan, Helen McCulligh, and Sophia Giangrande started in 9th place and finished 8th, achieving their goal of “beating the bibs.”
Similarly, the men’s team of Alexis Ermel, Robin Mason, Xavier Normandin, and Noah Weir Chaba moved up from 9th to claim 7th place, showcasing a strong performance.
