OTTAWA (CIS) – Quarterback Kyle Quinlan and cornerback Steve Ventresca, both from McMaster, and Laval kicker Boris Bede, are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport football players of the week for the period ending Nov. 17, 2012.
The selection was made by a committee comprised of members of Football Reporters of Canada (FRC).
Quinlan, a fifth-year economics student from South Woodslee, Ont., was honoured on offence thanks to an MVP performance in the Marauders’ 45-6 domination of Calgary in last Saturday’s Mitchell Bowl, in Hamilton. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound pivot completed 25 of 35 passes for 412 yards and three touchdowns and also had three rushing majors and 50 yards on 11 carries. The Hec Crighton Trophy nominee and top-ranked McMaster (11-0) hope to defend their Vanier Cup title against No. 2 Laval (11-1) Friday at Rogers Centre, live on TSN and RDS at 7:30 p.m.
Laval running back Maxime Boutin was also up for the award.
Ventresca, a third-year geography student from Hamilton, took home the weekly honour on defence after he helped the Marauders shut down Calgary’s top-ranked offence. The 6-foot, 184-pound junior tallied nine solo tackles and broke up two passes as McMaster’s defensive unit kept the Dinos out of the end zone and held the reigning five-time Canada West champions to 200 yards of total offence.
Laval defensive end Arnaud Gascon-Nadon was also nominated.
Bede, a second-year business administration student from Toulon, France, was the choice on special teams thanks to his two field goals in as many attempts and averages of 41 yards on seven punts and 56.2 on six kickoffs in Laval’s 42-7 Uteck Bowl victory over Acadia, last Saturday in Quebec City. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound sophomore, who split the uprights from 12 and 17 yards out, also added five converts in the win. The Rouge et Or hope to capture a record-setting seventh Vanier Cup banner on Friday night.
McMaster cover specialist Trevor Gary was also up for the distinction.
