FRC - CIS football players of the week (#8) Paquette-Perrault, Betts, Arthur honoured
TORONTO (CIS) – McGill quarterback Frédéric Paquette-Perrault, Laval defensive end Mathieu Betts and Alberta kicker Brent Arthur are the CIS football players of the week for the period ending Oct. 15, 2016.
Paquette-Perrault, a first-year accounting major from Montreal, was honoured on offence after he had the best game of his young university career in a 37-14 road win over Bishop’s last Friday night. The 6-foot-2, 212-pound freshman picked apart the Gaiters defence, completing 37 of 48 passes (77%) for 465 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions to help the Redmen even their season record to 3-3. Paquette-Perrault, who also scored on a two-yard run early in the fourth quarter to increase McGill’s lead to 30-14, now ranks seventh in Quebec conference history for single-game completions, only four shy of the league record.
St. Francis Xavier receiver Kaion Grant, McMaster running back Chris Pezzetta and Saskatchewan receiver Mitch Hillis were also up for the award.
Betts, a second-year physical education and health student from Montreal, took home the award on defence thanks to a stellar performance in a 22-19 road victory against previously undefeated and top-ranked Montreal last Saturday. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound sophomore spent the afternoon in the Carabins backfield, finishing with three quarterback sacks and six solo tackles as the Rouge et Or held the RSEQ’s top-rated offence to season lows in points, first downs (17), total yards (331) and rushing yards (40). Betts, who was named the CIS rookie of the year and a first-team all-Canadian in 2015, also helped Laval move up to No. 1 in the national rankings for the first time in over a calendar year.
StFX lineman Kay Okafor, Queen’s safety Wesley Mann and Calgary lineman Jack McEwen were also nominated.
Arthur, a second-year education student from Bright’s Grove, Ont., was the choice on special teams after he led the Golden Bears to their first win of the campaign, a 19-18 upset of then nationally fourth-ranked Regina last Saturday in Edmonton. The 6-foot-1 sophomore, a transfer from Quincy University (NCAA Division II), connected on all four of his field goal attempts, including a career-best 41-yarder as time expired in the first half and a 26-yarder with 18 seconds left in regulation. Arthur also converted Alberta’s lone touchdown to account for 13 of his team’s 19 points on the day.
Kickers Ryan Lambert of Mount Allison, Mathieu Hébert of Sherbrooke and Niclas Bembenek of Queen’s were the other nominees.
