Tshibola leads Laval past UBC 83-75 in consolation opener at U SPORTS Men’s Final 8
Chris Tshibola poured in a game-high 25 points to lead the Laval Rouge et Or to an 83-75 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds in the first consolation game Saturday afternoon at the 2026 U SPORTS Men’s Final 8, presented by Student Housing Calgary, at Jack Simpson Gym.
Tshibola added four rebounds and three assists while going 10-for-13 from the free-throw line as Laval rebounded from its quarterfinal loss to move into the fifth-place game.
Jayden Larosiliere chipped in 16 points, including four three-pointers, while Mohamed Keita added 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in a strong two-way performance for the Rouge et Or. Laval also got 10 points and eight rebounds from Chakib Sedoud.
Laval established control early, jumping out to a 19-15 lead after the opening quarter before extending the margin in the second. The Rouge et Or outscored UBC 23-12 in the frame to take a commanding 42-27 lead into halftime, highlighted by Tshibola’s scoring surge and Larosiliere’s early shooting from beyond the arc.
The Rouge et Or pushed their advantage to as many as 16 points midway through the second quarter and maintained a double-digit cushion for much of the afternoon.
UBC showed signs of life after the break. Nylan Roberts sparked the Thunderbirds with aggressive play on both ends, helping them trim the deficit in the third quarter. Roberts finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead UBC.
Zeru Abera added 11 points, while Holt Tomie contributed 12 points and five assists despite shooting struggles from the field.
The Thunderbirds outscored Laval 25-20 in the fourth quarter but were unable to close the gap as Tshibola sealed the win at the free-throw line down the stretch.
Laval held a 45-38 edge on the boards and converted 27 of 33 free throws, helping offset a tough shooting night from the field.
With the victory, Laval advances to Sunday’s fifth-place game, while the loss brings UBC’s season to an end.
