The Windsor Lancers leaned on timely scoring and a standout performance from goaltender Max Donoso to defeat the Mount Royal Cougars 4-3 in the opening quarterfinal of the 2026 University Cup, presented by Steele Mazda, Thursday afternoon at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax.
Windsor, the No. 4 seed and OUA finalist, improves to 23-8-3 and advances to Saturday’s semifinal, where they will face either Saskatchewan or Saint Mary’s at 1 p.m. Atlantic. Mount Royal, the Canada West finalist, sees its season come to an end at 22-10-0.
Despite being heavily outshot 41-20, the Lancers capitalized on their opportunities and received stellar goaltending from Donoso, who turned aside 38 shots to keep Windsor within striking distance throughout.
Alex Cunningham opened the scoring late in the first period, finishing a feed from Owen Jones to give Windsor a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Mount Royal responded early in the second, as Tristan Zandee buried the equalizer just over two minutes in to make it 1-1 heading into the third.
The game turned quickly in the opening minutes of the final frame. Jacob Boucher restored Windsor’s lead at 2:43 before Brady Hinz struck just 11 seconds later, stunning the Cougars and putting the Lancers up 3-1.
Connor Bouchard brought Mount Royal back within one on a power play midway through the period, but Cunningham responded with his second of the game at 10:41, which stood as the game-winner.
Josh Tarzwell added a late goal for the Cougars to make it 4-3, but Windsor held firm down the stretch to secure the victory.
Cunningham, who scored twice including the winner, was named Windsor’s player of the game, while Bouchard earned the honour for Mount Royal.
