The UQTR Patriotes struck early and never looked back, defeating the Moncton Aigles Bleus 4-0 in the third quarterfinal of the 2026 University Cup on Friday afternoon at the Scotiabank Centre.
In a matchup featuring the only two francophone programs in U SPORTS men’s hockey, the OUA champion Patriotes controlled the game from the outset, building a three-goal lead in the opening period and riding a composed, defensive effort the rest of the way.
Kassim Gaudet opened the scoring on the power play at 8:23 of the first, and UQTR quickly added to its lead with even-strength goals from Charles Beaudoin and Mathis Cloutier just over a minute apart late in the frame. The early surge proved decisive, as the Patriotes dictated pace and limited Moncton’s chances through the final 40 minutes.
Conor Frenette added an insurance marker early in the third period to round out the scoring for UQTR, which outshot Moncton 31-27 and dominated the faceoff circle.
William Grimard was stellar between the pipes, turning aside all 27 shots he faced for the shutout, including several key stops during a push from the Aigles Bleus in the second period. Moncton goaltender Olivier Adam made 27 saves in the loss.
Despite generating 27 shots and earning a penalty shot late in the first period, Moncton was unable to solve Grimard, as UQTR’s structured defensive play limited second-chance opportunities throughout the contest.
With the win, the No. 3 seed Patriotes improve to 27-6-3 (20-5-3 OUA) and advance to Saturday's national semifinals, where they will play either UNB or Queen's at 7 p.m. (Atlantic). The No. 6 seed Aigles Bleus see their season come to an end at 23-12-2 (19-9-2 AUS).
