The Toronto Varsity Blues capitalized on a first-half red card, scoring four second-half goals to rout the Cape Breton Capers 5-0 in U SPORTS men's soccer consolation play Friday at Varsity Stadium.
The game turned decisively in the 31st minute when Cape Breton's starting goalkeeper, Luka Palajsa, was shown a red card, forcing the Capers to play a man down for nearly 60 minutes. Toronto (13-3-1, 9-2-1 OUA) took full advantage, unleashing a relentless attack that produced 21 total shots.
Gianluca Scurti and Niklas Hallam led the offensive charge for the Blues. Scurti scored twice in the second half, while Hallam finished with a goal and an assist. Jacob Prested also tallied a goal and an assist, and Andrea Schifano opened the scoring in the 17th minute.
Playing with ten men for most of the contest, the Capers (12-4-1, 9-2-1 AUS) struggled to generate offence, managing only one shot on target against a combined shutout from Toronto goalkeepers Charles Donvito and Alex Lin. Backup keeper Jack Harrington was under constant pressure for Cape Breton, making six saves after being pressed into duty following the sending off.
The victory sends the Varsity Blues to the tomorrow’s fifth-place game. The loss eliminates the Capers from the national championship.
