The eighth-seeded UQTR Patriotes, playing a man down for over 43 minutes, delivered a stunning upset by defeating the top-seeded and host Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 in a dramatic extra-time quarterfinal at the U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship on Thursday.
Substitute Mouhamed Ndiaye emerged as the hero, scoring the game-winning goal in the 96th minute of play to send the Quebec conference's regular-season winners to the national semifinal.
The game was a rollercoaster from the opening whistle. UQTR stunned the home crowd early, with Alexandre Marcoux scoring just 1:16 into the match. The OUA champion Varsity Blues responded in the 25th minute as Michael Osorio leveled the score.
UQTR regained the lead before halftime, with Emile Boivin finding the net in the 41st minute. Toronto pushed back in the second half, with Jordan Grey equalizing in the 57th minute to make it 2-2.
The game’s momentum shifted dramatically in the 77th minute when UQTR’s Zakary Minka was shown a second yellow card, reducing the Patriotes to 10 men. Despite the disadvantage, UQTR’s defense held firm, with goalkeeper Mathieu Lacharite making a critical save on a Toronto penalty kick shortly after the red card.
Lacharite was spectacular throughout, making 11 saves, including five in the final 15-minute extra-time period to preserve the lead under intense pressure from the Toronto attack.
The victory sends UQTR to the national semifinal on Friday night, where they will face the Mount Royal Cougars. The top-seeded Toronto Varsity Blues see their championship hopes end and will play the Cape Breton Capers in a consolation game Friday afternoon.
