The Mount Royal Cougars are through to the national championship game, powered by a dominant defensive performance and two goals from striker Chanan Chanda, the national rookie of the year. The Cougars defeated the UQTR Patriotes 2-0 on Friday night in the second semifinal of the 2025 U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship at Varsity Stadium.
From the opening whistle, the Canada West champions looked the more dangerous side, controlling the tempo and creating the better chances. Their pressure paid off in the 17th minute when Chanda broke the deadlock, finishing an unassisted effort to give the Cougars an early lead they would not relinquish.
The Patriotes, who entered as the regular-season champions from the RSEQ conference, struggled to break down a disciplined Mount Royal backline. UQTR managed 12 shots but only forced three saves from Cougars' goalkeeper Sjard Strauss, who earned his second clean sheet of the tournament.
The match was put to bed in the 72nd minute when Chanda struck again, this time finishing a feed from Jonathan Walter to double the Cougars' advantage and secure his brace.
The game's complexion turned in the final minutes when UQTR's Doryan Soualem was shown a straight red card in the 88th minute, ending any faint hope of a Patriotes comeback.
With the victory, Mount Royal advances to the national final on Sunday at 2 p.m., where they will play for the U SPORTS championship against the York Lions. UQTR will regroup for the bronze medal game which kicks off Sunday at 11 a.m.
