Calgary captures bronze medal with win over host Laval
Kourtney Oss recorded a dominant double-double to lead the Calgary Dinos past the host Laval Rouge et Or 66-59 in the bronze-medal game Sunday at the 2026 SunLife U SPORTS Women’s Final 8, presented by Michelob and Hilton Québec, at the Amphithéâtre Desjardins.
The victory secures Calgary’s first women’s basketball bronze medal since 2001 and caps a strong season for the Dinos, who finish the year with a 28-5 record (16-4 Canada West). Laval ends its campaign at 20-9 overall (13-3 RSEQ) after falling just short of a podium finish on home court.
Oss, named Calgary’s player of the game, delivered a standout performance with 18 points and a game-high 20 rebounds while adding three assists, three steals and two blocks. The forward took control late, scoring 11 of her points in the fourth quarter as the Dinos held off a late Laval push.
Christine Geraldo chipped in 14 points and six rebounds for Calgary, while Pollyanna Storie added 13 points, knocking down three three-pointers in the opening half.
The teams traded baskets early in an evenly played first quarter that ended with Laval holding a narrow 22-21 edge. Calgary responded in the second frame, outscoring the Rouge et Or 18-13 to carry a 39-34 lead into halftime.
Laval rallied in the third quarter behind Sabrine Khelifi, who scored 10 of her team-high 14 points during the frame to keep the hosts within striking distance entering the fourth. Khelifi, who added nine rebounds, five assists and three steals, was named Laval’s player of the game.
However, the Rouge et Or struggled to find their rhythm offensively in the final minutes, finishing the afternoon shooting 28 per cent from the field and 19 per cent from three-point range. Calgary also held a slight edge on the boards, outrebounding Laval 40-36.
Léa-Sophie Verret added nine points and five assists for Laval.
Sunday’s contest marked the final game of the season for both teams.
