UNB tops Calgary 70-66 to advance to U SPORTS women’s championship final
Kylee Speedy scored 16 points and helped spark a decisive third-quarter run as UNB defeated the Calgary Dinos 70-66 in the first semifinal Saturday at the 2026 SunLife U SPORTS Women’s Final 8, presented by Michelob and Hilton Québec, at the Amphithéâtre Desjardins.
With the victory, UNB advances to Sunday’s national championship game, their first appearance in a national final since 1975-76.
Speedy, named UNB’s player of the game, shot 5-for-9 from the field and knocked down four three-pointers while adding three assists and three steals in a strong two-way effort for the Atlantic champions.
Katie Butts led all scorers with 20 points on an efficient 9-for-13 shooting night, while also pulling down six rebounds. Lilia Skumatova contributed 14 points, including three fourth-quarter three-pointers that helped UNB maintain control down the stretch.
The teams traded momentum early, with Calgary holding a narrow 15-13 edge after the opening quarter before UNB surged ahead in the second. UNB outscored the Dinos 22-16 in the frame to take a 35-31 lead into halftime.
The AUS champions delivered their biggest push in the third quarter. Speedy hit a pair of threes during a 24-point period, helping UNB stretch the lead to double digits while shooting efficiently from the field.
Calgary mounted a late push in the fourth quarter, cutting into the deficit behind Kourtney Oss. The Dinos’ player of the game finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and five steals while providing a defensive spark throughout the contest.
Christine Geraldo and Amelie Collin each added 14 points for Calgary, which forced 23 turnovers but struggled to fully capitalize offensively.
Despite the pressure, UNB held firm in the final minutes, using timely baskets and rebounds to keep the Dinos at bay.
The victors finished the game shooting 48.1 per cent from the field and held a 36-25 edge on the glass as they secured their spot in the national final and will be looking to capture the Bronze Baby for the first time on Sunday evening.
Calgary, for its part, will move on to the bronze-medal game on Sunday afternoon.
