Murphy Wiebe powers Saskatchewan past Laval into national final
Ella Murphy Wiebe delivered a dominant performance with 26 points and 16 rebounds to lift the Saskatchewan Huskies past the Laval Rouge et Or 55-43 in the second semifinal Saturday at the 2026 SunLife U SPORTS Women’s Final 8, presented by Michelob and Hilton Québec, at the Amphithéâtre Desjardins.
With the victory, Saskatchewan improves to 29-1 overall (20-0 Canada West) and advances to the national championship game, where the defending champions will face the University of New Brunswick at 5 p.m. Laval falls to 20-8 (13-3 RSEQ) and will meet Calgary in the bronze medal game Saturday at 1 p.m.
Murphy Wiebe, named Saskatchewan’s player of the game, controlled the paint throughout the contest, going 8-for-14 from the field while adding 10 free throws and 16 rebounds in 33 minutes.
In a defensive battle from the opening tip, both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm. Saskatchewan held a narrow 14-12 lead after the first quarter before extending the margin slightly to 25-22 by halftime.
The third quarter remained tight, with neither side able to generate sustained scoring runs. Saskatchewan carried a slim 36-33 advantage into the final frame as both defences continued to dictate the tempo.
The Huskies finally created separation in the fourth quarter, outscoring Laval 19-10 down the stretch. Murphy Wiebe led the charge with eight points in the final period, while Saskatchewan capitalized at the free-throw line to secure the victory.
Tea DeMong added nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds for Saskatchewan, while Maya Flindall chipped in nine points as the Huskies controlled the glass with a 52-31 rebounding edge.
Brinly Holt, Laval’s player of the game, finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Sabrine Khelifi added 12 points for the Rouge et Or.
Both teams struggled shooting from the field, with Saskatchewan connecting on 29.6 per cent of its attempts and Laval finishing at 23.2 per cent.
Saskatchewan will now look to capture its second consecutive national championship, while Laval shifts its focus to the bronze medal game against Calgary.
