UBC beats Montreal in the second consolation semifinal
Aimee Skinner helped spark a turnaround as the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Montréal Carabins 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17) in a consolation matchup Saturday at the 2026 U SPORTS Women’s Volleyball Championship, presented by Booster Juice, at the Langley Events Centre.
Skinner, named UBC’s player of the game, delivered an efficient performance with eight kills on 14 swings (.500), while adding three service aces and six digs as the Thunderbirds rebounded after dropping the opening set.
Montréal started strong, claiming the first set 25-21 behind the attacking of Milica Djordjevic and Sephora Menye Obele. The Carabins capitalized on early UBC errors and used a late surge to close the frame, putting the Thunderbirds briefly on their heels.
UBC responded quickly in the second set, tightening its defense and putting pressure on Montréal from the service line. The Thunderbirds recorded 11 aces in the match and used that advantage to build momentum, evening the contest with a decisive 25-17 set win.
The teams traded points through much of the third set before UBC’s offense found another gear late. Skinner and Lucy Borowski delivered key kills during the stretch run to secure a 25-21 decision and give the hosts control of the match.
UBC carried that momentum into the fourth, pulling away midway through the set as their serving and transition offense forced Montréal into mistakes. The Thunderbirds closed things out comfortably at 25-17.
Borowski paced UBC with 12 kills and 12 digs for a double-double, while Kylee Glanville added seven kills. Setter Issy Robertshaw helped orchestrate the attack with 20 assists.
For Montréal, Djordjevic led all Carabins with 13 kills and five total blocks, while Menye Obele contributed 13 kills and Florence Lapointe added seven. Libero Ilona Millan, the Carabins’ player of the game, recorded 12 digs.
With the win, UBC advances to Sunday’s fifth-place game at noon, while the loss brings Montréal’s season to an end.
